Our Goals

The Hamilton Centre for Psychoanalysis attempts to teach and apply the concepts of psychoanalysis that further and deepen an understanding of unconscious processes in the individual, culture and society. The Centre seeks to realize these goals by sponsoring lectures, seminars, discussion, and study groups, case presentations, workshops, and book clubs. The Centre has successfully held courses in areas relevant to clinical and applied psychoanalysis.

Historical Roots

The Hamilton Centre for Psychoanalysis has historical roots in its affiliations with The Group for Applied Psychoanalysis at McMaster University; the Toronto Psychoanalytic Society and the Psychoanalytic Treatment Centre, Toronto. They have sought to widen academic understanding of the psychoanalytical approach to culture and society.

Areas of Focus

Communicating a psychoanalytic perspective to the therapeutic and teaching communities in the Hamilton-Wentworth and Niagara regions including: family physicians, nurses, psychiatrists and psychologists, social workers, medical residents, teachers and career councilors, corporate community, human resources, cultural minorities, family members, mothers, fathers, adolescents, marital conflicts, divorce, grief counceling, geriatrics, and family mediation.

Members of the Centre reflect a wide community involvement, all sharing a common conviction in the importance and value of understanding the effect of unconscious processes on everyday life.
